Dilated Cardiomyopathy

What is it and what can we do about it?
Dilated Cardiomyopathy, or DCM, is a serious heart disease that affects the heart muscle. In dogs with DCM, the heart becomes enlarged and weak, making it harder to pump blood properly. Over time, this can lead to heart failure and other life-threatening complications.
This condition is especially important to understand if you're considering a Doberman, because they are one of the breeds most commonly affected. In fact, DCM is one of the leading health concerns in Dobermans. Unfortunately, the disease often shows up later in life, and it can be difficult to detect early without regular heart screenings like echocardiograms and Holter monitoring.
While we can’t completely eliminate the risk, responsible breeders work hard to reduce it by screening their breeding dogs and avoiding certain bloodlines known to be affected. It's important for owners to stay informed, continue regular veterinary checkups, and work closely with their vet to monitor heart health throughout the dog’s life.
